ELM Curriculum

The Early Learning Matters (ELM) Curriculum is a highly accessible and adaptive program that supports optimal learning and development of children from birth to five years of age. There is influence of the standards established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) on the curriculum’s content and methods.

Promoting Quality

  • can be efficiently used by staff with different levels of professional preparation and experience.
  • reflects high-quality research on child skills that matter and program practices that work.
  • promotes responsiveness to children’s actions, understandings, and interests.

Preparing Children

  • is full of developmentally appropriate experiences that support a broad range of skills linked to school readiness and life success.
  • offers easy-to-use activity plans that emphasize active learning, including guided play.
  • includes tools and strategies to help staff adapt and individualize learning experiences.

Empowering Staff

  • includes numerous implementation suggestions in a set of developmentally sequenced learning plans.
  • supports staff as experts in adapting planned activities to meet the needs of children.
  • eliminates the challenges of developing or finding research-informed learning activities and coordinating different curriculum resources.

Infants & Toddlers

  • 25 weeks of activity plans
  • Five focus areas of development for infants and toddlers
  • The activities are sequenced according to the way infants and toddlers typically develop particular skills and knowledge.
  • The activities are organized by blocks that cover a two-week period.

Blocks:

  • Infants (0-12 months)
  • Toddlers 1 (12-24 months)
  • Toddlers 2 (24-36 months)

Key Characteristics of Learning Activities

Intentional

Activities are purposeful in the content, sequence, and approaches to providing a solid foundation for success in school and life. The activity helps children build skills in paying attention, remembering, and engaging in self-control. It supports both physical and cognitive development.

Meaningful

Each ELM activity plan offers flexibility for ensuring children engage in learning that is tailored to their current understandings and abilities. The classroom staff member set the rules of the game to accommodate the participating children’s current and emerging skills. The activity plan offers adaptation ideas for children who may need additional supports or extra challenge.

Plentiful

The ELM Curriculum is generous in the amount and quality of support for skills that bolster positive outcomes. Activities build on the power of frequent and increasingly challenging experiences with emerging skills. Like many ELM activities, self-regulation games are offered often because frequent practice is a proven way to develop new skills. More challenge is added to a game when children are ready.

Preschool (3-5 yrs)

  • 50 weeks of activity plans

  • Eight focus areas of development for preschool age children

  • The activities are organized by blocks that cover a two-week period.
  • ELM activities are designed for mixed-age preschool classrooms enrolling children from 3 to 5 years of age. Scaffolding tips and related suggestions in each activity plan can help classroom staff accommodate a range of child abilities and interests.

More about our Curriculum

ELM curriculum is the basis for our curriculum. From there the staff supplement with additional materials and learning activities to correlate with the seasons, children's interests, etc. and to challenge the children to help them grow academically/cognitively, socially, physically, and emotionally. Our curriculum follows the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards.
